about

Inversion Therapy is an ongoing collection of tracks submitted by local artists who have played at least one Inverted Grim-Mill Recordings live show since 2012.

Volume two contains another 20 fine examples of the weird and wonderful things that are happening in the North East of England, presented in a useful alphabetical index.

Before I get into the details of each contributing act, consider this a reminder than any donations received for this digital compilation (and the previous volume) over the weekend of the 3rd-5th of July will be passed on the Music Venue Trust. The option to download for free is still there and I know many people are pretty skint at this point... but do consider chipping in a couple of quid to help the cause if you can, and look out for other fundraising goodies elsewhere on bandcamp. There are a lot of charitable associations needing support right now.

The tracks submitted here are all by artists and collectives based in the wider North East region who have played a gig for us at some point since 2012, when Inverted Grim-Mill branded events began. Raising money to keep venues alive and allow us to return with more events seems like a sensible use of you donations at this time, as I'm sure you'll agree.

Many thanks to all the contributing artists in this collection, a wonderful assortment of generous people all round. Here's who they all are...

1727 - Gateshead Astral Projection Clinic
1727 is the solo dark ambient horror drone of Penance Stare's Esmé Newman, who invites us for a proper spooky meander around the southern banks of the Tyne during the proverbial witching hour. She's previously done some wonderful releases on TQN-aut and a collaboration with Möbius on Panurus Productions.

Anti-Bastard - Salad Cream
Anti-Bastard provide booze fuelled chaotic punk wrongness of the lowest quality about all manner of ridiculous subject matter. They recently wrote a song about wasps. Guitarist Dougy informed his wife who mockingly said "pfft, why don't you just write a song about salad cream?", so they did.

Bleach - The Drowning of Braying Men
Bleach were (are?) Sunderland's finest two (sometimes three) piece noise rock collision. Thundering drums and broken guitars in the hands of hugely irresponsible but thoroughly talented people. Unfortunately they never put out a finished release despite talking to ourselves and of course their native Serial Bowl Records - this track is a lightly polished turd of their latter day practice room rattlings. There is a shady bootleg tape from when they played with Joey Molinaro and Wrest available from N-aut though.

Brad Field - Shivved
Brad Field is a truly unique character. Under his real name Jeremy Bradfield, he's a musical director, composer and performer, but this alter ego project takes his skills somewhere else entirely. His precision drum chops and unusual set up incorporating trigger pads for samples and pipe organs make for a very interesting listen indeed. Yes, real life pipe organs! Nothing on bandcamp for this project, but have a search on youtube for the wonderful video to this track and you'll maybe find a couple more there...

Chlorine - Vowel Rembor
Chlorine is the experimental electronic, field recording and loop based project of celebrated pictorial collage artist Graeme Hopper. His audio talents are equally interesting and just as prolific, with various releases on superb labels across the land including Cadmus Tape, Crow Versus Crow, Panurus Productions and TQ Zine amongst others. This one is new and (currently) exclusive I believe.

Colugo - Kudzu
Colugo are a two piece drone generator utilising vocals and guitar to soundtrack nocturnal wildlife activities. They are comprised of James Watts, vocalist for too many projects to list, and Jake Bielby, the usually technical widdly guitarist extraordinaire restricted to a more minimal sound palette for this project. The two are both in Plague Rider and most recently collaborated on Jake's ongoing personal experimental metal project, Dybbuk.

Corpse Twitcher - As Silent as Moths
Corpse Twitcher linger like the stench of rotting flesh in their Gateshead mausoleum AKA The Soundroom, where they produce endless waves of ominous murk, perform the occasional ritual and record countless other artists such as Bong, Blown Out, Fret, Mirrored Lips, Snakes Don't Belong in Alaska and Nathalie Stern. We had the pleasure of releasing their most recent album on CD while Cruel Nature Records handled the tape version. This track is exclusive to this compilation.

Dextro - Connect
Dextro has been the solo project of Ewan Mackenzie for near enough twenty years, and continues to produce interesting reflective pieces. This track was initially made in isolation for broadcast on BBC Scotland thanks to Vic Galloway. If you're unfamiliar with Dextro, check out his previous records on Border Community, Grönland and his own 16k Records, who we also worked with to release his latest LP 'An Hour is a Sea' earlier this year. Dextro first played for us a couple of times back in 2010, before this label even existed, but more recently returned to play a superb show with Colossal Squid. Ewan deserves a special mention for all his help with mastering / adjusting volume levels on these compilations, and hosting a few band members from time to time!

First Process Church of Mars - Dance of the Monitor Lizards
First Process Church of Mars were (are?) Hartlepool's premier thundering psychedelic krautrock jammers. They have been absent for a good 2 years since their last show, and it was a further 2 years before that when they had previously performed, but their releases are definitely still worth investigating. Drummer Michael Kitching now plays for esteemed bands like Onlooker, The Girl Sweat Pleasure Temple Ritual Band and Shy-Talk as well as being involved in the excellent Hartlepool Gig Collective.

Geomancer - Deserter (live at Byker Grave festival 2015)
Geomancer are no stranger to this label, with us having released their initial demo CD and the follow up proper album. They've played countless gigs for us whenever some seriously hefty riffs have been required, and always deliver with minimal fuss. Right now their primary members are scattered between Yorkshire, Teesside and Scotland with plans to experiment with a stripped back line up, new ideas and different sounds somewhere down the line. This track was often performed as part of live sets and seems to really conjure up the atmosphere and imagery of their signature sound. Recorded at Byker Grave Festival 2015.

Goblinsmoker - Toad King
Goblinsmoker are Durham based doomers with a concept trilogy on the go. This is the opening track on their first tape, initially made available via Sludgelord Records and completely sold out twice. These guys have really gone all out to get their ideas fully formed and professionally recorded, thanks to their experiences of playing in other projects over the years, such as Iced Out who are included below. The Goblinsmoker live show is just as impactful as the recordings and is well worth seeing.

Gorean Slave Master - Dungeon Master
Gorean Slave Master is the now retired project of 'Skinny' Craig Walton. His often disturbing industrial noise takes many forms but will always leave you feeling a little bit sick. GSM played two shows for us... the first was also our very first Grim-Mill show, where he happened to be in attendance and was able to fill in for an unexpected drop out. From what I remember, it ended abruptly with a broken laptop. Five years later he performed our 5th birthday bash as a special guest.

Iced Out - Space Mountain
Iced Out were Durham based sludgy hardcore shouters who were active 2012-2016 and played a blinding set for us alongside Art of Burning Water, Baxter Stockman and Big Fail in 2015. They were also down to support Dopethrone but rescheduling the show and the untimely demise of the band meant it was not to be. You can download their entire discography for free or pay what you want from their bandcamp if you like the sound of them. The track included here is the last track from their final studio release, Man's Ruin. As mentioned previously, members went on to form / join Goblinsmoker.

Lore - Still
Lore was a duo of Michael Kitching and Matthew Johnson, both of First Process Church of Mars and residents of Hartlepool. With this project, they experimented with modular synths to create beautiful minimal soundscapes while nervously giggling at each other, making their live shows a joy to behold. From what I can tell, all associated pages have been removed with plans for a new name and new music some time in the future. For now, sample the sonic delights of this wonderfully minimal piece.

Lucy Adlington - 001
Lucy Adlington performed for us under the name of Stealing Kittens, but has since abandoned that title in favour of using her real name. Her live show compromised of various stabs and jabs at guitar strings with a rusty blunted knife, truly exorcising some musical demons. This is the opening track from her now iconic Nuclear Holocaust tape.

Lump Hammer - Stuck (live)
Lump Hammer relentlessly churn out deafening repetitive motifs from the simple trio of vocals, drums and guitar, yet sound absolutely gigantic thanks to their purely massive tone, impactful drum smashing and generally unstoppable nature. In keeping with their signature method of not playing anything off the things I have to try and sell from the overlooked merch stand, this is an unreleased tune recorded at their most recent gig. New album in the works this year, their fourth thing on Inverted Grim-Mill. Is this on it? I have no idea.

Mondo Sadists - Cathedral of the Deep
Mondo Sadists are similarly oppressive with the big sounds, hardly surprising for a band featuring members of Foot Hair and aforementioned guitar mangler Lucy Adlinton. This track serves as a moment of respite in their live show, where Sam Booth drops his drumsticks, stops shouting and picks up the almighty baritone sax. Combined with the slide bass and very church organ sounding guitar, the title could not be more fitting. Selected from their long awaited self titled tape.

Nathalie Stern - Blade Patch
Nathalie Stern is a Swedish born Newcastle resident who has been living and performing in the area for over a decade, gradually moving from acoustic guitar to synth while retaining her looped and layered vocal style. Her talents have seen her perform as part of improvised projects headed by the likes of Damo Suzuki and Thor Harris, but her solo work is where she really shines. As a long time fan it was an honour to get involved with the release of recent and long awaited album 'Nerves and Skin'. This track was recorded during the same sessions and is often performed live, but has a different feel to the album with it's colourful synths presented as a homage to John Carpenter. Vocals build towards the end thanks to contributions from Maz and Lindsay of the Noize Choir and MP Wood of Corpse Twitcher.

Schwarzgerät - The Dark Precursor
Schwarzgerät is a duo of local noise heroes John Bowers and Ben Freeth that formed during their time together at Newcastle University Culture Lab for a one-off performance at the infamous Dronehenge all dayer organised by Shadow of Venom and assisted by ourselves. Upon my asking for submissions for this compilation, they got to work on a brand new lengthy collaboration via email which is what you can hear right here. Fingers crossed they continue onward.

Watts - Magnetic Swamp
Watts is the name used by the ever prolific James Watts for his solo noise experiments, like that time he filled a speaker cone with Werther's Originals while supporting Sly & The Family Drone. Most recently he has been making isolated basement drones, collaborating with Forest Mourning and keeping busy with his label, Panurus Productions. This is his eighth appearance in the Inversion Therapy collection, with more to follow no doubt!
